How to paint bathroom tiles the easy way: ideas & steps

Tiles are the go-to material for bathrooms, no question about it. It doesn’t matter if it’s your grandmother’s bathroom, the one in your country house or in a newly built home. But like everything in life, it’s inevitable to grow tired of them after seeing them day after day. And the thought of retiling with never-ending construction work can be quite off-putting, right?

Painting bathroom tiles is the fastest, most affordable and effective way to renovate a bathroom without building work, whether you’re a DIY expert or not. With the right tile paint, you can transform the space, give it a modern look and create a greater sense of openness—without rubble or complications.

In this article, we’ll share six ideas that will show you just how easy it is to give any bathroom a refreshed look. As simple and quick as making a wish.

6 bathroom tile painting ideas you wish you knew sooner

The bathroom is usually a small, minimally decorated space, but renovating it without building work is entirely possible thanks to tile paint. If you were considering a traditional renovation, pause for a moment: with paint, you can enjoy a brand-new bathroom without spending a fortune. Here are six effective ways to do it.

1 - Paint Your Bathroom Tiles for a Designer Look

Tiles are the most visible feature in a bathroom, and time inevitably takes its toll on them, so it’s only natural to want to refresh them and give the space a new look.

Painting outdated tiles gives them a completely new appearance. Subtle shades help create a minimalist bathroom, and if you add floating shelves or wicker baskets, you’ll achieve a warm and cohesive atmosphere.

2 - Bring Back the White by Painting Your Bathroom Tiles

White is one of the most widely used colours in the world of interior design. As it reflects light, it helps make spaces feel visually larger, enhancing brightness and creating a sense of order.

If the bathroom has lost light, painting the tiles white instantly refreshes it and adds a greater sense of spaciousness, especially in small bathrooms. You can balance the space with black taps or coloured towels. This way, you counteract any possible overly cold or clinical feel.

3 - Don’t be afraid to mix and match when painting bathroom tiles

Mixing colours when painting tiles allows you to create modern contrasts, define areas such as the shower or highlight the upper half of the wall with a different shade. Complete the look with textiles or shelves to achieve a vibrant style.

Some combinations never fail: white and black for an elegant contrast, or green with earth tones to bring that sense of nature and freshness we love so much.

4 - Painting bathroom tiles for a monochrome look

A monochrome style creates a sense of visual continuity. You can use a single colour throughout the entire bathroom or different shades within the same colour palette to achieve harmony and depth.

In interior design, this technique is used to make spaces feel larger, and also the opposite when the space being renovated is very spacious. In fact, the total colour look, like minimalism, is a trend that continues to gain popularity. And with this idea, you can incorporate it perfectly into your home.

5 - Make those annoying tile grout lines disappear

Dark grout lines are one of the elements that make a bathroom look older. When you paint the tiles, the grout lines become visually blurred and seem to disappear, leaving a cleaner, more modern and uniform surface.

This seamless effect helps the space feel larger and more organised, creating a brighter and more contemporary look.

6 - Paint small bathroom tiles to make it feel cozy

In small bathrooms, light colours add a sense of spaciousness and brightness. A built-in wooden unit or subtle accessories help complete the look without overcrowding the space. Repainting is quick and highly effective.

Choosing neutral shades such as whites, beiges, greys or soft earth tones will reflect much more light, giving the bathroom greater visual depth.

How to paint bathroom tiles easily: step-by-step guide

We love renovations that are good, beautiful and affordable, especially when they’re DIY projects. So, let’s get down to it! Below, we’re sharing the step-by-step guide on how to paint tiles for a spectacular result.

1. Clean and repair the bathroom tiles – don’t rush!

If your bathroom wall has any cracks or chips, it is important to cover them first with filler using a spatula, and let it dry for the time specified by the manufacturer.

Next, you should clean the tiles thoroughly with soap and water to remove grease. Using a brush can be a great help to leave the grout lines perfectly clean. Also remove any limescale residue with vinegar, rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth.

Don’t forget to cover the floor in the area with plastic and protect the edges, as well as any sockets and switches if there are any.

2. Time to prime the bathroom tiles!

Primer helps improve the adhesion of the paint. To apply it, stir well and pour it into a tray to load a brush. Use the brush for edges and corners. For the rest of the tiled surface, use a roller, making sure to load and remove excess product beforehand. Apply two coats: one in a single direction and the second crosswise.

Once finished, do not wait for it to dry—remove the masking tape you applied earlier. Then let it dry for the time indicated by the manufacturer.

In the case of Smartcover Tiles, you can skip this step, as it is a paint with such high adhesion that it does not require a primer.

3. Apply the paint!

Before applying the paint, protect the tiled area again, as well as sockets and switches.
Open the paint can, stir until you get a smooth, even mixture and pour it into the tray. Repeat the same technique as before: first apply the paint to edges and corners with a brush, then use a roller for the rest of the surface.

Once the first coat is dry, apply a second one, alternating directions. If the first coat was vertical, apply this one horizontally—and vice versa. The key is to alternate directions with each coat.

Generally, two coats are enough, but depending on the original tile colour, you may need an additional one.

If you use Smartcover Tiles, thanks to its high covering power, you will only need two coats, regardless of the original tile colour.

How to maintain painted tiles

Keeping painted tiles looking good and extending their lifespan is very easy if you follow some basic day-to-day care. As this is a renewed surface, proper cleaning and correct use will make all the difference in terms of durability.

Use gentle cleaners: use neutral detergents and soft cloths or non-abrasive sponges. Avoid harsh products such as bleach, ammonia or metal scouring pads, as they can damage the surface finish over time.

  • Clean regularly: there’s no need to wait for dirt to build up. Regular cleaning prevents stubborn stains and makes maintenance easier, keeping a cleaner and more polished look over time.
  • Pay attention to humidity: although tile paint is designed for humid areas, it’s advisable to ventilate the bathroom after showers to avoid excessive condensation. This will help preserve the finish in perfect condition for longer.
  • Check high-use areas regularly: pay special attention to areas like the sink or shower, which are used more frequently. Detecting any wear early allows you to fix it quickly without repainting the entire surface.
  • Avoid strong impacts or friction: tile paint has a durable finish, but it still needs care, as strong impacts—especially from hard or sharp objects—can damage the surface.
  • Refresh the joints if needed: if over time you notice that areas such as the joints lose intensity or show slight wear, you can apply a new coat to that specific spot to restore its original appearance quickly and easily.

If you follow these tips, your painted tiles will stay in perfect condition for much longer, maintaining a clean, well-kept, modern and uniform look.
