Sealers

Sealing is the last step and the one that decides how long your microcement lasts. The coating provides the colour and the texture, but it is the varnish that gives the real resistance to water, stains and everyday cleaning.

Smart Varnish is the water-based sealing varnish, available in a matte or satin finish. It goes on in three thin coats over the already sanded microcement and it is what closes the pore of the material. Smart Booster is an additive mixed into the varnish to reinforce it: it is used in wet or heavy-use areas — shower, worktop, kitchen floor — where the surface will take water, grease or constant footfall.

Both are water-based, with no strong smells, and are formulated for Smartcret microcement. An honest note: sealed microcement stands up to water, but not to standing water, so on floors it is worth checking that the slope drains properly towards the outlet.

Once the finish has cured — that is 7 days — maintenance is water and pH-neutral soap. For long-term care you have cleaning and maintenance. And if you are after the complete system, the microcement kits already include the sealer.

I found this product because I was so sick of cleaning tile grout. I wanted the Tadelakt look without spending $$$. The process takes time but the result was worth it. Only use the plastic trowel — a metal one leaves black marks. The Smartcret team was very helpful. I love my new shower and get so many compliments on it!
