Additional information

What should you consider when choosing a microcement sealer?

Choosing a good microcement sealer is essential to ensure the long-term durability of the coating. This product acts as a protective layer against moisture, stains, and everyday wear.

By applying a sealer for microcement, you not only improve the resistance of microcement surfaces, especially in wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, but also enhance their appearance. Available in matte or satin finishes, it allows you to personalize your spaces while ensuring effective protection.

Types of microcement sealer

There are different types of microcement sealer, including polyurethane, acrylic, and solvent-based formulas, each with its own specific characteristics.

Water-based polyurethane microcement sealer (recommended)

Ideal for interior spaces, easy to apply, and more environmentally friendly thanks to its formula free from toxic components. This microcement sealer offers fast drying and reliable protection against water, stains, and daily wear. It provides the perfect balance of durability, ease of application, and indoor safety. It is the best option for bathrooms, kitchens, and homes. Smart Varnish belongs to this category.

Solvent-based polyurethane microcement sealer

This type of microcement sealer provides greater resistance, but also produces higher emissions, so proper ventilation and protective equipment are required during application. For this reason, it is not recommended for indoor residential use by DIY users. It can also yellow when exposed to sunlight.

Acrylic microcement sealer

More affordable and easy to apply, but less resistant in wet areas or high-traffic spaces. It is a popular alternative, although it requires more maintenance and more frequent reapplication because its protection is more temporary.

Compared with all available options, water-based polyurethane sealer for microcement stands out for its balance of durability, ease of use, and safety.

How often should you renew a microcement sealer?

It is recommended to renew microcement sealer every 2 to 3 years, depending on use and exposure to moisture, foot traffic, or cleaning products.

In areas such as bathrooms or showers, wear may be greater, so it is advisable to check the condition of the sealer for microcement regularly.

Over time, even a high-quality microcement sealer such as Smart Varnish can wear down, especially in areas exposed to high humidity and daily cleaning, such as showers.

Signs that your microcement sealer is wearing out

  • Loss of sheen: if you notice that your surfaces look duller or less shiny than before, it may mean that the microcement sealer layer has started to wear down. A new application of sealer for microcement will help restore the original finish.
  • Visible marks appearing: the appearance of small scratches, stains, or areas where the microcement sealer seems damaged is a clear sign that the protection is starting to weaken. These marks may become more frequent, especially in high-traffic areas or on surfaces exposed to harsh cleaning products.
  • Visible wear in frequently used areas: if you notice heavier wear in certain areas, such as corners or surfaces especially exposed to water, it is probably time to reapply the microcement sealer. Visible wear may indicate that the microcement is becoming less protected, making the surface more vulnerable to stains and moisture penetration.

Maintenance tips to extend the life of microcement sealer

  • Regular cleaning: use a soft cloth or a slightly damp mop to remove dust and dirt. Prioritize gentle cleaning products, such as Smart Cleaner, that will not damage the microcement sealer layer.
  • Avoid abrasive products: harsh cleaners or products containing acidic components can damage the surface of the microcement sealer. Choose products specifically designed for sealed surfaces.
  • Regular inspection: check the surface regularly for signs of wear, such as loss of sheen or small scratches, and act quickly to preserve the durability of the microcement sealer.

Application

How to seal microcement with Smart Varnish

Once 24 to 48 hours have passed since applying the final coat of microcement, check that the surface is dry and clean.

If applying over an existing microcement sealer, sand the surface thoroughly and remove any traces of stains, grease, dust, or poorly adhered material.

Apply 3 coats of Smart Varnish sealer for microcerment using a brush or roller, allowing 4 hours between coats. Lightly sand the first and second coats with 400-grit sandpaper.

In high-traffic areas or wet zones, it is recommended to mix Smart Varnish microcement sealer with Smart Booster for enhanced protection. The number of coats and drying time remain the same. The main difference is improved stain resistance and increased surface hardness.

Important: wait 7 days before putting the surface into service, as this is the full curing time of the microcement sealer.
