Is Microcement Waterproof? The Honest Answer (and What the Sealer Does)

Yes — correctly applied and sealed, microcement is waterproof. The microcement itself is a 2-3 mm mineral coating; what makes the finished surface withstand daily water is the sealing step: Smart Varnish, reinforced with Smart Booster in wet areas. That is why a sealed microcement shower, bathroom or kitchen front handles running water day after day. And because honesty ranks high around here, the answer comes with its fine print: the protection has rules — running water yes, standing water no — and we would rather show you the limits than let a puddle find them first.

Why the sealer is what makes it waterproof

Think of the system in two halves. The microcement layers — base and finish — give you the seamless mineral texture you are after. The varnish on top is the technical half: it closes the surface and is what actually repels water. Our ready-to-use system starts with an advantage: its acrylic base is, in itself, more waterproof than traditional two-component or single-component cement-based microcements. Even so, the definitive protection always comes from sealing with Smart Varnish — and, in showers, sinks and other wet areas, mixing it with Smart Booster.

No hidden steps: primer, thin coats of microcement, varnish. If those layers are respected, water stays where it should — on the surface, easy to wipe.

Waterproof surface by surface

Showers

Yes — walls and built-in shower trays. Our microcement shower kits are formulated for direct water contact and include the reinforced sealing. One rule matters: the tray needs a correct slope toward the drain, so water runs off instead of pooling.

Bathroom walls and floors

Yes. A sealed microcement bathroom has no grout lines, which means no joints for mould to colonise — a damp cloth does most of the maintenance.

Kitchen fronts and splashbacks

Yes. Steam, splashes and daily wiping are exactly what the sealed surface is made for.

Worktops

Water is not the problem once sealed — heat is. Microcement does not tolerate hot pans well, so we are upfront about it: beautiful worktop, yes; put a trivet on it. Here is the full picture on microcement worktops.

Outdoors

Yes: terrace floors, façades and outdoor stairs withstand sun, rain and frost with the same kits. Swimming pools are the exception — microcement is not indicated for them. The details are in our outdoor microcement guide.

Running water vs standing water: the honest bit

"Waterproof" does not mean "a pond liner". The resistance refers to contact with running water: a shower running, a splash, a wet floor you mop. Standing water is different — if a sink or shower tray lets water accumulate in the same spot for hours, day after day, the finish suffers. That is why the slope toward the drain is non-negotiable, and why we say it out loud instead of hiding it in the small print.

Stains, cracks and repairs

Stains. Sealed with Smart Varnish and reinforced with Booster, the surface withstands water, soap, food residue, oil, vinegar, coffee or wine without visible marks for up to 8 hours. Wipe spills sooner rather than later and the finish stays spotless.

Cracks. Microcement does not crack on its own. When cracks appear, the cause is almost always underneath: a substrate that moves, coats applied too thick, or drying times not respected. Our system needs no reinforcing mesh — it is flexible by formulation, and mesh would only add thickness. Two limits we keep repeating: treat damp problems before coating, and skip underfloor heating, which we do not recommend.

Repairs. A worn or damaged area is recovered by lightly sanding and reapplying in that zone. And the varnish is renewable: in bathrooms, kitchens and other wet or busy areas, refresh Smart Varnish every 2 years (every 3-4 elsewhere) and the waterproof performance stays where it started.

Microcement vs tiles, venetian plaster and polished concrete

Tiles are waterproof; their grout lines are the weak spot where mould settles. Microcement goes directly over existing tiles, joints filled, leaving one seamless surface with nothing to colonise.

Venetian plaster protects walls from ambient damp and breathes beautifully, but its wax seal is decorative — not for showers or splash zones. The full comparison is in our venetian plaster guide.

Can you use microcement in a shower?

Yes: shower walls and built-in trays, sealed with Smart Varnish mixed with Booster. Choose the kit by size and substrate, keep the slope toward the drain, and the shower is a weekend project.

Is microcement cheaper than tiling?

A complete ready-to-use kit costs €45-53/m² in materials, and it goes over the existing tiles — no demolition, no rubble, no skip hire. A fair comparison depends on your tiler's quote, since labour dominates the price of tiling; with microcement, the labour is yours.

How often does microcement crack?

With a sound substrate, thin coats and respected drying times: it does not. Cracks are a symptom of the base moving or the process being rushed, not of the material ageing.

What are the disadvantages of microcement?
