Microcement in the shower goes straight over the tray and the tiles you already have, in a thin coat and without ripping anything out. What you get is a continuous surface, with no grout lines to hold limescale, and the look of a hotel shower. It is done in three days, with no rubble, and the rest of the bathroom stays in use while you work: only the shower waits ten days.
Microcement is waterproof once cured, seven days after the last coat dries: water neither stains it nor soaks into it. The varnish is not what makes it waterproof, and it is still essential: it provides the resistance to soap and everyday cleaning, protects against wear and gives the matt finish. That is why the kit includes it and why you apply every coat the instructions call for. If your shower is tiled or mosaic, the grout lines have to be filled and levelled with Smart Jointer first so the pattern does not show through later; if it is solid build, mortar or concrete, the kit goes straight in with its primer.
Count on ten days without the shower: three of work and seven of curing. That is the real timeline and it is worth knowing before you start, especially if it is the only shower in the house.
The corners and the joint around the drain are the delicate part. Not because cracks appear — that is not common — but because they are the hardest areas to leave properly smooth, and a rough surface holds dirt. That is where patience and a careful finish matter, with the microcement and with the varnish. If the leak you have is exactly where the shower meets the wall and you are covering both, the system solves it. But if you know there is an underlying waterproofing problem, prepare the surface first with an approved waterproofing product: microcement cures waterproof, it does not repair what was already failing underneath.
The shower is not sold on its own: it is part of the microcement kit for bathrooms, which also covers walls, countertop and sink in the same colour and the same finish. You choose the square metres of your shower, the colour from twenty and the surface you have, and the price is fixed. In the US, a professional applicator charges around $315–420 per m² (roughly $29–39 per sq ft), labour included, and for a single shower most will not even travel.
