Microcement in kitchen countertops

Kitchen countertops coated with microcement are on the rise. This is one of the applications gaining the most popularity, but it requires meticulous care to avoid regretting the choice over time. Why? Because if certain aspects aren't considered, this attractive finish can completely ruin the space. And we don’t want that, right?

First of all, you should know that microcement is not a fireproof coating. For this reason, you can’t place excessively hot pans or pots directly on the countertop. They’ll leave marks! Secondly, many people cut food directly on their countertops without using wooden or plastic cutting boards. If this habit persists, it would eventually scratch the microcement.

Because of this, although microcement can be applied to kitchen countertops without any issues, at Smartcret, we don’t recommend it or provide guarantees. However, if you’re still firm in your decision and want to create a beautiful microcement countertop in your kitchen, remember these tips to enjoy it for a long time without significant damage.

Oh, and don’t forget! Be careful with stains! Just as you wouldn’t leave oil or coffee stains on a granite countertop for days, don’t do it on a microcement one either. Always, always clean them as soon as possible. You’ll be glad to know, though, that with the combination of Smart Booster and Smart Varnish, resistance to these stains is extraordinary—up to 8 hours without leaving marks! But as the saying goes: better safe than sorry. That way, you’ll have a microcement countertop in your kitchen in perfect condition with a long lifespan.

How to make a DIY microcement countertop step by step

Now comes the most fun part of the process: creating your countertop. If you don’t consider yourself especially handy, don’t worry, because at Smartcret we’ve created an diy microcement so anyone can use it without a problem. Let’s get started!

1. Clean and prepare the surface

Clean and dry the surface you want to cover to ensure it's completely free of dust and grease. Apply masking tape to define the area where you'll apply the microcement.

For a deeper clean, you can use our Smart Cleaner.

Easy, right? Let’s move on to the next step.

2. Fill the joints

If your countertop has joints, don’t worry!

You can fill them with a spatula or trowel to make the surface completely smooth.

Try our Smart Jointer to fill the joints of tiles and mosaics on your countertop.

3. Use a primer

After filling the joints, we recommend applying a primer to the countertop before applying the microcement to ensure better adhesion and a longer-lasting surface.

If your surface is absorbent, such as plaster or drywall, use our Smart Primer ABS; otherwise, you can use Smart Primer PLUS.

4. Apply the microcement

Now, let’s get to work.

Spread the microcement evenly over the countertop in a thin layer and smooth it out with the trowel.

Then remove the adhesive tape between layers and allow it to dry.

With our Smart Base product, you can enhance adhesion before applying Smart Liso, with which you’ll only need two layers to achieve excellent results. Thanks to its quick drying, you’ll have your perfect countertop in no time.

Lastly, sand after each layer—be careful! Make sure not to leave any rough edges.

5. Protect

Final step!

After applying the microcement, it’s crucial to protect your work to ensure it’s properly sealed.

You can do this with our Smart Varnish to achieve a matte or satin finish.

Whatever you prefer!

Price of the microcement countertop

In the case of countertops, the price of microcement usually ranges between $10 and $18 per sq ft in the United States and between £80 and £130 per m² in the United Kingdom, not including labour, so the final cost will vary depending on the professional applying it.

If you love surprises, but not when it comes to quotes, microcement kits for countertops will help you avoid them. They range from $241 to $498  or from £165 to £340 depending on the original material of the surface, the room and the square metres to be renovated. And since you can apply them yourself, you also save on labour costs. Take a look at our microcement price guide and transform your home for very little.

Tips for caring for your microcement countertop and keeping it looking like new

You can use microcement on the countertop, especially in bathrooms, thanks to its high resistance to water (not stagnant water) and humidity. However, we don’t recommend it for kitchens, nor do we guarantee it. If you still want to go ahead and create your own microcement countertop, here are some tips to keep this finish in perfect condition.

1. Daily cleaning

Clean the surface daily with a cloth and water to keep it disinfected.

For more thorough cleaning, use our Smart Cleaner to clean and care for your microcement countertop.

2. Avoid prolonged contact with chemicals

Don’t use harsh chemicals that can alter the microcement finish and damage the surface. If you come into contact with such products, clean immediately.

3. Protect from stains

Don’t let oil and vinegar stains take over your countertop! Clean the stains as soon as possible and keep your space spotless! With our combination of Smart Varnish and Smart Booster, you can achieve excellent chemical resistance for up to 8 hours (check the technical sheet for more details).

Your countertop will thank you!

4. Maintain shine and resistance

To keep your microcement countertop in top condition for longer, we recommend using Smart Wax, a maintenance wax that helps maintain its hardness and natural shine.
