The stairs in your home don’t just serve a practical function — they are also design elements that bring style and personality to a space. They are also one of the areas where you can create a great synergy between creativity and decoration.
Do you know why microcement stairs have become such a major decorative trend? Why they are the best option to renovate your stairs and, at the same time, update the atmosphere of your home? Below, we explain their advantages, share decoration ideas and show you how to renovate your steps.

Advantages of microcement stairs
Stairs are undoubtedly one of the surfaces that wear out the fastest due to heavy daily foot traffic. Therefore, they are one of the areas of the home that most benefit from renovation with all the advantages that microcement offers.
Installing microcement stairs in your home is an excellent idea if you are looking for a solution that is both functional and stylish. Stay tuned, we’ll tell you more right away.
Infinite stairs with a seamless finish
Think about it: the most visually attractive homes and spaces are always the most open. Observing surfaces with no joints or interruption lines has this innate ability to make us feel more comfortable, providing visual and sensory pleasure. And that’s the way it is.
Why? Because the lack of interruptions in the surfaces allows us to perceive them as a whole, perfectly integrated with each other. Simplicity, minimalism, and purity that visually expand the spaces and immediately improve the positive connotations they convey.
Sounds like fantasy, right? And the truth is, it is. Microcement stairs have the magic of being part of the rest of the surfaces, adding value to the rooms they cover, thus increasing the sense of space in your home.
Easy cleaning and maintenance of the steps
What about cleaning the floors without having to focus or pay attention to the expansion joints where most of the dirt tends to accumulate?
Microcement stairs are cleaned in the blink of an eye, being as practical as they are beautiful. A quick cleaning done in one pass thanks to completely continuous surfaces. The simple mix of water and neutral pH soap is enough to achieve effective cleaning. A completely streamlined process so you can invest your time in what you really enjoy doing. And it’s probably not cleaning.
Resistance and durability for microcement stairs
One of the characteristics of microcement stairs is their extreme resistance. Constant traffic, impacts, or abrasion are no problem for keeping them looking as flawless as the first day.
A material designed to withstand all kinds of knocks that, on stairs, works in the most effective way.
This outstanding resistance makes them highly durable over time, without the need to worry too much about wear, use or exposure to everyday factors. Treat yourself to the luxury of enjoying stairs that feel brand new every single day.
Anti-slip finish
Another advantage is their anti-slip finish, which makes microcement stairs both safe and stylish, preventing slips and falls for children, adults and pets alike.
Without affecting the structural load
The thin layer of microcement application, between 2 mm and 3 mm, allows you to renew your favorite surfaces in your home without affecting their structural load in any way. Had you ever seen something so easy? We certainly hadn’t.
Endless design possibilities for microcement stairs
We know you’re full of creativity and eager to show it to the world. Even more so when you can express it on your own surfaces, making them truly yours, personalised and full of character.
Microcement stairs often keep the natural grey tone of this coating. But as you know, in decoration there are no limits, and every surface has the “right” to reflect the style its owner desires. Because in decoration, anything goes — and at Smartcret, we prove it.
At Smartcret, we offer our own colour palette so you can decide exactly how your microcement stairs should look. From elegant neutrals to pure whites, as well as more vibrant shades like green, blue or coral.

Beige microcement stairs: an ode to nature
Beige microcement stairs add a chic and sophisticated touch to your home. Beige is a soft, subtle tone, considered an ode to nature as it evokes elements such as sand, linen or wood. It blends perfectly into any space, creating a harmonious balance.
Modern microcement stairs
The seamless finish of microcement gives your home that modern touch you want to see every day. Whether you choose neutral or bold colours, your stairs will go from ordinary to stylish and contemporary.
Minimalist microcement stairs
Microcement is the perfect coating to enhance this increasingly popular decorative style. It brings elegance to any space with the simplicity that defines minimalism. Sometimes, less really is more.

Microcement stairs with lighting
Playing with lighting in home decoration is increasingly common. Spotlights, wall lights, pendant lamps… it’s not what you add, but how you do it. By placing light points near your microcement stairs, you’ll achieve that chic and distinctive look you’re after.
Floating microcement stairs
If your stairs are floating, coating them with microcement will make them look spectacular from every angle. Elegance, simplicity, modernity and that unique touch we all love. So that every time you step on them, it feels like walking along a magical path through your home.
Microcement on stairs, yes, but is it compatible with any surface?
Microcement has many great qualities, and there’s no doubt about that. But what do you say about knowing that, no matter the surface, it can be applied without any problem and ensures maximum adhesion? Well, that’s the case.
What sets microcement apart from other decorative coatings is precisely its versatility. It is a material that can be applied on marble, granite, tiled, cement or concrete stairs, among many other surfaces.
Microcement stairs that are completely continuous and stable, modernizing the atmosphere of your rooms and updating the overall look. An unmistakable decorative design, surfaces created to make it impossible to take your eyes off them.
There is only one catch with microcement stairs. And that’s that this coating is not recommended for installation on wooden surfaces. Why? Because wood is a material that tends to contract and expand, which could cause microcracks that would damage the new surface, affecting the overall look of your microcement stairs and interfering with the results of a project with so much potential. At Smartcret, we seek the best for you.
How to apply microcement on stairs: steps and tips
Ready-to-use microcement is one of the best options for renovating a small bathroom without building work, as it can be applied to 90% of the bathroom surfaces: floors, walls, shower, bathtub or even furniture. It is durable, hygienic and perfect for wet areas, while also creating a greater sense of spaciousness thanks to its seamless, joint-free finish.
Basic steps to apply microcement on stairs
1. Assess the condition of the surface
To achieve the result you have in mind, the surface must be in good condition and free from dust and grease, so it is essential to check this before starting.
If you detect cracks or chips, they must be repaired before continuing.
2. Fill the joints (if there are any)
If your staircase is tiled with ceramic tiles or slabs, it will have joints, and you will need to fill them with putty to create a more even surface. This will prevent them from remaining visible once the microcement has been applied. With Smart Jointer, it’s very easy: apply it with a spatula, leave it to dry for 24 hours and then sand it with 40-grit sandpaper.
3. Prime the staircase
Primer helps create adhesion between the microcement and the staircase, and depending on the material of your steps, you will need to use one type of primer or another.
If you have an absorbent surface such as plaster, drywall, cement or concrete, you should use a primer specifically designed for these materials. However, if it is a non-absorbent surface such as tiles, slabs, marble, terrazzo or mosaic tiles, you will need a different type of primer. At Smartcret, we offer Smart Primer ABS and Smart Primer PLUS to cover both needs. Apply a thin, even coat and leave it to dry for 30 minutes before moving on to the next step.
4. Apply the microcement base coat
The base microcement gives consistency to the surface. In traditional systems, it is usually not pigmented, so you will need to mix it before applying it.
In the case of Smartcret, as it is ready to use, the process is easier: you just need to open, stir and apply. Apply a first thin coat, leave it to dry for about 6 hours before sanding it, and then apply the second coat following the same procedure.
5. Coat with the finishing microcement
The finishing microcement is responsible for giving texture to the surface. In traditional systems, you will also need to prepare the microcement mix before using it. If you are using the ready-to-use system, as you already know, you can apply it directly. Spread the first coat, leave it to dry for 6 hours and then sand it lightly before applying the second and final coat. Leave it to dry for 24 hours.
6. Seal and protect your microcement staircase
Now it’s time to protect and seal the microcement! This step is essential because it improves the staircase’s resistance to daily use and helps the finish last much longer.
Two coats of varnish are enough to give this coating the necessary protection to keep its appearance looking good for much longer. Leave each coat to dry for 4 hours before sanding and applying the next one.
Remember that drying times may vary depending on the manufacturer and must be followed exactly to ensure that the result of applying microcement on stairs is exactly what you want.
As you’ve seen, applying microcement on stairs is very simple if you follow the step by step. And if you use Smartcret’s ready-to-use microcement, it will be even easier thanks to the interactive application guide, which lets you follow the process clearly and easily.
These are very simple and easy steps to follow. If you use Smartcret microcement, you won’t go wrong, as our interactive application guide will help you follow each step clearly and easily.
Tips for applying microcement on stairs
Today, there are solutions such as ready-to-use microcement that allow you to renovate without construction work and without prior DIY experience. At Smartcret, we have developed our ready-to-use microcement, a standout product in the decoration sector that you can apply yourself, without construction work, easily and in a short time.
Our microcement kits for stairs allow you to renovate your steps without hiring a professional. The process is very simple, as you have seen in our application guide. Here, we briefly explain what you should keep in mind when applying it.

- Protect the corners or edges of the steps
Because this is the area most exposed to all kinds of knocks and friction, the corners or edges of the steps must be properly protected. You can apply corner protectors or aluminium profiles, whether concealed or visible.
If you leave them visible, they will add a very special touch of elegance and, at the same time, protect your microcement stairs for longer against chips and wear.
- Try to keep the edges of the stairs slightly rounded
This will help you successfully avoid chips or knocks on your new microcement stairs.
- Respect the drying times before stepping on them
It is important that, once the final coat of sealing varnish has been applied, you allow it to dry properly. The varnish will be dry to the touch much sooner, but it only reaches its maximum performance after a full 7 days.
- Fibreglass mesh
With most microcements — and also depending on the professional applying it — fibreglass mesh is used to add strength to the microcement stairs. However, if you are using Smartcret microcement, mesh is not necessary, which also makes the application process faster.
Now that you know how easy it is to create a microcement staircase, if you’re curious to discover how to apply microcement on other types of surfaces, you can learn the full process in our guide.
How to keep your microcement stairs always beautiful and well-maintained
Although we mentioned that microcement stairs don’t require exhaustive care to shine on their own and capture all eyes, with a couple of tricks, you can keep them (even more) looking like they belong in any art gallery.
The daily cleaning of these surfaces can be done easily, simply, and quickly with a mixture of water and neutral pH soap. Just like we clean any other surface in our home, without much complication or the need for especially complex products or processes.
How to clean microcement stairs
Cleaning microcement stairs is such an easy and quick task that you may find it hard to believe. Simply with water and pH-neutral soap, your stairs will be clean and look as good as they did on the first day. If, on some occasions, more dirt than usual builds up and you need a slightly more thorough cleaning, we have designed Smart Cleaner. It keeps microcement stairs spotless and, in addition, it is environmentally friendly, as it is ecological and biodegradable. What more could you ask for?
Maintenance of microcement on stairs
The protective layer on microcement stairs can wear away over time, as is natural.
That’s why it’s best to apply our Smart Wax every four to six months. A product that renews the protective layer of the microcement and ensures a high natural shine and extra hardness on the surface.
An unparalleled all-in-one, exactly what your microcement stairs need.
