How to apply microcement on your kitchen wall

Applying microcement in the kitchen is a very simple process — you no longer need to be an expert to get the best result.

Here's how to do it the right way:

1. Prepare the surface

Before starting the application, it's essential to prepare the surface correctly. This way you'll ensure proper adhesion of the product.

So make sure to clean the walls thoroughly, removing any traces of grease, dirt or dust that may remain on them.

2. Apply the primer

It's very important to apply a coat of primer specifically designed for microcement — this ensures the coating adheres correctly to the wall. Then let it dry for a couple of hours.

In this case you can use Smart Primer ABS or Smart Primer PLUS to improve the adhesion of the base.

And the fibreglass mesh? If you've watched two-component microcement tutorials you'll be missing it: with Smartcret's ready-to-use microcement it isn't necessary, because it's an acrylic mortar and doesn't suffer shrinkage. One step less (and a few euros less).

3. Apply the microcement

Mix the microcement and start by applying a first coat with the help of a trowel.

Then let it dry for a few hours, depending on the manufacturer.

Can you apply microcement to kitchen walls?

Yes, and it's one of its star uses. It's applied directly over existing tiles, plasterboard, cement or marble, without removing anything and without building work. In 2-3 millimetres of thickness you get a continuous, seamless wall that's resistant to moisture and everyday splashes. The splashback, too.

Can I apply it over the tiles without removing them?

Yes: that's exactly the case the kit is designed for. The grout lines of the tiling are covered by the base coats and disappear under the continuous surface. You only need the tiles to be firmly attached — if any of them is loose, remove it and fill the gap before you start.

Is microcement recommended in a kitchen?

On walls, floor and splashback, yes — these are surfaces where this material performs more than well. The only surface where we ask you to read before deciding is the countertop: it's beautiful, but it doesn't handle heat well and you should know its limitations. With a professional applicator, between €90 and €120/m² depending on the finish and the condition of the base. If you do it yourself with a kit, the price goes from €186.61 to €1,084.36 depending on the metres and the wall material — you provide the labour. Which is cheaper, tiles or microcement?

The material itself costs about the same. The difference lies in everything else: tiling means chipping off or removing what's there, rubble and labour; microcement goes directly on top of the existing wall. And if you choose the DIY route, the kit works out at about €45/m² — at that point there's no comparison.
