How to apply ready-to-use microcement yourself

There isn’t just one way to apply ready-to-use microcement. Renovating a bathroom is not the same as renovating a piece of furniture, just as applying it on drywall is different from applying it over tiled floors. Every surface and every space requires its own step-by-step process to achieve the result you expect.

  1. Clean and repair the surface.
  2. On tiled surfaces, fill the joints with Smart Jointer.
  3. Apply the appropriate primer: Smart Primer ABS (drywall, plaster) or Smart Primer PLUS (tiles).
  4. Apply 2 thin coats of the preparation microcement Smart Base.
  5. Apply 2 thin coats of the finishing microcement Smart Liso (walls) or Smart Medio (floors).
  6. Protect the surface with Smart Varnish sealer. In wet areas, mix it with Smart Booster.
  7. Let it dry for 7 days and show off your ready-to-use microcement makeover.

Traditional powdered microcement usually requires a more technical preparation process. Powder, resin, pigments and, in some cases, other additives must normally be mixed together, following specific proportions to achieve a homogeneous mixture. If the mix is not prepared correctly, color differences, texture issues, loss of workability or defects in the final finish may appear.

By contrast, Smartcret ready-to-use microcement is designed to make application easier without compromising on a decorative and resistant finish. Can I apply ready-to-use microcement over underfloor heating? ▼
Although some ready-to-use microcements are compatible with underfloor heating, at Smartcret we do not recommend applying it on this type of substrate. This heating system requires following a very precise start-up and shut-down protocol that must be carried out by a professional. If it is not followed correctly, cracks may appear due to the expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes.
Can I apply Smartcret ready-to-use microcement outdoors? ▼
No, Smartcret ready-to-use microcement is not recommended for outdoor use. Since it has not been tested in this type of environment, its use outdoors is not covered by the warranty.
If I already have Smartcret ready-to-use microcement applied, how can I change its color? ▼
First, the varnish must be sanded to open the pores and improve adhesion. Then, Smart Primer ABS is applied and, once the surface is properly prepared, a new ready-to-use microcement system can be applied in the desired color.
Can I use an electric sander when applying Smartcret ready-to-use microcement? ▼
No, we do not recommend using an electric sander, as it can be too aggressive and affect the final finish, even burning the product. For better control and a better result, it is preferable to sand manually. In addition, our sandpaper grits are specifically designed for manual sanding.
How do you clean Smartcret ready-to-use microcement? ▼
Smartcret ready-to-use microcement is easy to clean with a cloth, water, and pH-neutral soap. For deeper cleaning, we recommend using a specific product such as our Smart Cleaner.
How can you extend the lifespan of Smartcret ready-to-use microcement? ▼

To extend the lifespan of Smartcret ready-to-use microcement, it is important to clean it regularly with water and pH-neutral soap and avoid abrasive products. It is also advisable not to use scouring pads or metal brushes and to protect the legs of tables, chairs, and other furniture to prevent scratches when moving them.

In addition, we recommend visually inspecting the condition of the sealer periodically and reapplying Smart Varnish, at the latest, every 2 years in bathrooms, kitchens and surfaces exposed to humidity, frequent foot traffic or high wear. In bedrooms, living rooms, offices and other areas subject to less wear, the sealer can be renewed every 3 or 4 years.

As an additional and optional maintenance step, Smart Wax can be used to reinforce protection and help preserve its appearance.

How does Smartcret ready-to-use microcement respond to stains? ▼
Once sealed with Smart Varnish, Smartcret ready-to-use microcement offers good stain resistance. In addition, when mixed with Booster, its chemical resistance increases significantly, protecting the coating against water, soap, food residue, oil, vinegar, coffee, or wine without visible marks for up to 8 hours*. Even so, we recommend cleaning stains as soon as possible to prevent them from setting over time, as they could leave a ring or mark and become more difficult to remove.
Is Smartcret ready-to-use microcement water-resistant? ▼
Yes, when properly applied and sealed, Smartcret ready-to-use microcement is water-resistant. That’s why it can be used in bathrooms and kitchens*. *The resistance refers to contact with running water, not standing water. In sinks and shower trays, it is essential to ensure the correct slope toward the drain to prevent water accumulation that could damage the finish.
What accessories do I need to apply Smartcret ready-to-use microcement? ▼
To apply Smartcret ready-to-use microcement, you need a burn-resistant trowel to spread the material, a roller to apply the primers and varnish, a spatula to stir the product and cover joints and corners, and sandpaper for sanding between coats. It is also advisable to use protective tape and a bucket for greater comfort while working.
