Everything you need to know about microcement for floors and stairs before you start

Description

What it is

Microcement to renovate the floor or stairs you already have, without lifting them.

It goes on top of the existing surface in a thin layer, so there is no demolition and no rubble. You choose the surface you have and the kit adapts to it.

Twenty colours, all with a matt finish. The kit arrives complete and with step-by-step instructions.

Before you start, three guides from the blog: the complete microcement floor guide, microcement stairs and microcement for the kitchen floor.

Application

How to apply it

It goes on top of what you already have, with no ripping out and no rubble. The kit includes all the products and step-by-step instructions; the tools (trowel, roller and tray) are sold separately. There are four products, always in this order:

  1. Preparation. On tile, stoneware, porcelain, terrazzo or marble the surface does not absorb: first fill and level the grout lines with Smart Jointer (12-24 hours of drying) and then apply Smart Primer PLUS, the maximum-adhesion primer (30 minutes). On cement, concrete or mortar the surface is porous and there are no grout lines to fill: apply Smart Primer ABS, the primer for absorbent surfaces, and after 30 minutes you can carry on.
  2. Smart Base, two coats. This is the preparation layer: it is applied with a trowel in a thin layer (less than 1 mm per coat), left to dry for 6 hours between coats and sanded with the 40 grit disc.
  3. Smart Medio, two coats. This is the floor finish, the hardest in the system: a thin layer (0.5 mm per coat at most), 6 hours of drying between coats and sanding with the 120 grit disc. The second coat is the one that sets the final look. The whole build-up comes to around 2-3 mm thick.
  4. Smart Varnish with Smart Booster, three coats. Mix the Booster into the varnish container, stir it and apply 24 hours after the last coat of Smart Medio: three coats with a roller, 4 hours between them, sanding the first two with the 400 grit disc. The varnish is what gives the resistance to traffic, water and cleaning, and the matt finish.
  5. Putting it to use. You can walk on it carefully 48-72 hours after the last coat of varnish; furniture and normal use after 7 days, when the varnish reaches full cure.

No previous experience is needed. The application takes three days and the varnish reaches full cure after seven.

Properties

Properties

  • Seamless and continuous. Applied in a thin layer over the existing surface, so it does not noticeably raise the level.
  • Twenty colours. All with a matt finish, which comes from the varnish included in the kit.
  • Ready-to-use. The microcement comes pre-mixed: no measuring out or mixing aggregates.
  • Adhesion on difficult surfaces. The primer is what lets you apply it over non-absorbent surfaces such as tile.
  • Cleans with water and mild soap. No abrasive products or metal scourers, which scratch the varnish.
Uses

Uses

  • Living and dining room floors
  • Bedroom and hallway floors
  • Kitchen floors
  • Bathroom floors
  • Solid-build stairs, tread and riser
Additional information

Additional information

  • What arrives. Primer (Smart Primer ABS or, on tile, Smart Jointer and Smart Primer PLUS), Smart Base, Smart Medio, Smart Varnish with Smart Booster, 40, 120 and 400 grit sanding discs and step-by-step instructions. The tools (trowel, roller and tray) are sold separately, in the Smart Tools kit.
  • Coverage. Each size in the dropdown covers the area stated in its name, counting the two coats of Smart Base and the two of Smart Medio.
  • Storage. Keep unopened containers somewhere cool and frost-free.
  • Stairs. Tread and riser, as long as they are solid build: concrete, mortar or tiled steps. Wood and metal frames are out, because microcement needs a rigid surface that does not flex.
  • No need to touch doors or skirting boards. The thickness is just a few millimetres.

What’s included and what do I need separately?

The kit includes every product of the Smartcret system your surface and square metres need: primer, Smart Base, the finishing microcement (Smart Liso for walls and furniture, Smart Medio for floors), the Smart Varnish sealer and the sanding discs, with step-by-step instructions. You have them listed one by one, with quantities, in the “What arrives at your home” block, below the buy button, which changes with the metres and the surface you choose. Tools (trowel, roller, tray and sanding glove) are sold separately: you have them all in the Smart Tools tool kit. The microcement comes ready to use and pigmented; in the bathroom, kitchen, floor, outdoor and furniture kits the varnish is mixed with Smart Booster, which is included; for walls and fireplaces the varnish is used on its own.

Which m² kit do I need?

Measure the surface to be covered: for walls, width × height of each section; for floors, worktops or furniture, length × width of each face. Subtract only large openings and add up the total. Choose the kit whose m² is equal to or greater than that total; if in doubt between two, go for the larger one.

Is it right for my surface?

Each kit is formulated for a specific project and surface: you will find it in the kit name and in the “Surface” option of the selector. If your surface is different (for example, plasterboard instead of tiles), choose it in the selector and the kit adjusts. If your project is another room, you have all eight kits in the kit collection. First repair any loose piece, active crack or damp problem.

Can I return or exchange the kit?

Yes: you have 14 days from delivery for exchanges and returns. Return shipping is at the customer’s expense and your order number is enough for us. See the full conditions.

Frequently asked questions about microcement on floors and stairs

How much does a microcement floor cost?

With the kit, between £26 and £43 per m² including VAT, cheaper the larger the kit (from 4 to 96 m²). The exact price is settled before you start: it depends only on the square metres and the surface, and you see it in the selector on this page. The colour does not change the price, except in occasional promotions on some colours. It includes Smart Primer PLUS, Smart Base, Smart Medio, Smart Jointer, the Smart Varnish with Smart Booster, the sanding discs and the instructions; the tools come separately, in Smart Tools.

How long does microcement last on a floor?

Many years with simple maintenance: cleaning with water and neutral soap and, when use calls for it, renewing the varnish following the Smart Varnish technical data sheet, without redoing the microcement. Durability depends on two things: the surface, which must be rigid and free of active cracks, and the varnish, applied in full, in three coats with Smart Booster. That is the layer that withstands foot traffic and chairs; the microcement on its own is not meant to be left unsealed.

What are the drawbacks of microcement on a floor?

It requires respecting the timings: three days of application and seven until the varnish is fully cured, with 48-72 hours before walking on it carefully. It needs a rigid surface (concrete, mortar, terrazzo or well-bonded tiles); it does not go over wood, floating floors or floors that flex, and it is not recommended over underfloor heating. Being seamless, any active crack in the surface eventually shows through, which is why it has to be repaired before starting.

Can it be applied over the floor I already have, without removing it?

Yes, that is the whole idea of the kit: it goes over the existing floor, 2-3 mm thick, without chipping off or rubble, so there is no need to touch doors or skirting boards. On tiles, stoneware, terrazzo or marble the joints are filled with Smart Jointer and primed with Smart Primer PLUS; on cement or concrete it is primed with Smart Primer ABS. On stairs it works on masonry treads and risers; wooden or metal-framed stairs are not suitable.
